Dr. Shimada is Executive Vice President – Biomechanics with Aperture (formerly Biomechanical Consultants). He earned his Bachelor of Science (BS) degree from the College of Letters & Science with an emphasis in biomechanics from the University of California, Davis in 1992. He continued his education at California State University, Sacramento where he earned a Master of Science (MS) from the School of Health and Human Services in 1994. His emphasis at CSU, Sacramento was in the field of exercise physiology and biomechanics. He further earned a doctorate (Ph.D.) from the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences from the University of Pittsburgh in 1998, and a second Master of Science degree in Bioengineering from the university in 2000. Both of Dr. Shimada’s degrees from the University of Pittsburgh were in the field of biomechanics.
Previously, Dr. Shimada was the President of Biomechanical Consultants, a forensic biomechanics and engineering firm based in California, Nevada, and Oregon. He was formerly employed at the California State University, Sacramento in the Department of Kinesiology, as an instructor and Director of the Biomechanics Laboratory. Currently, Dr. Shimada is an instructor at Northwestern University at the Center for Public Safety. There he teaches "Injury Biomechanics and Traffic Crash Reconstruction". His primary area of consulting and research is focused on identifying, determining the likelihood, and prevention of brain and spinal cord injuries.
Dr. Shimada has authored nearly 100 peer-reviewed journals, conference proceedings, and abstracts in the field of biomechanics, medicine, and engineering. He has presented several research studies at meetings and conferences such as the Association for the Advancement of Automotive Medicine, International Society of Biomechanics, American Society of Biomechanics, and Biomedical Engineering Society. Dr. Shimada had testified over 200 times in superior courts throughout California and Oregon during the past 25 years.
